Episode 2882 Chasing Our Tails | The Pursuit of Happiness
[00:00:03] Good morning and welcome to Morning Coach today. I am so glad you’re with us. As you know, my name is J.B. Glossinger, and this is your personal evolution system, the place to get your day started right. Welcome, welcome, welcome. And I hope you’re off to a great day, putting some great energy out there. That’s what it’s about making a difference in the world. You know, if you get a chance today, do a RAK, a Random Act of Kindness. Maybe even just smile a little bit more. Open the door for a stranger. Say a heartfelt “thank you.” Those little things make such a big difference in the world, and we need it out there in this negative world that we live in. It’s time to change the way that we approach things and change our focus, and focus on the positive when we can. And that will allow us to really, really manifest the life that we’re looking to manifest and the things that we’re looking at. So excited that you’re with me today! Excited. If you are down a little bit with the energy, take some of mine, use it and keep rockin’. OK? Been talking about keys to happiness and peace this week. We started yesterday. We’re going to be spending the rest of the week on that.
[00:01:18] And before we do, again, just a little bit of energy out to those of you in Texas that are dealing with the flooding and the water, as much rain was dumped on you in that hurricane. I definitely know what that’s like, being here in Florida. It’s just, it’s, it’s just, you just, you know, getting through it is a challenge. And I know a lot of help is coming, but we’re sending, you know, massive energy as you get through that. And you know, hopefully, that rain stops and gives you a break so some of that can drain off. But that’s a tough situation down there. So, sending some massive energy to you guys over in Texas as you deal with this storm. And anybody else that is affected by that. Or really, the truth, is anybody that’s dealing with any, any issues. You know, I want to send you some energy to help you get through that. I know we have a lot of people come here because it is their positive place as they’re dealing with some challenges. And you know, I want you to know I’m here for you. And we’re always going to be here for you as you push through the challenges that you have in life.
[00:02:15] Today we’re going to talk about a story, and this story has to do with finding happiness. And it’s a little story. It’s a quick story, but I think it will help you kind of understand a lot of things in life. It really, really reflects a lot of the things that I believe in. Just the way the story is told. And again, it’s a little funny story. We’ll have some fun with it this morning, but I think it’ll help you, kind of, you know, get away from the chase. It really illustrates the point well that, you know, when we are chasing our tails, we, we don’t get what we’re looking for. We’ve got to learn to kind of settle and let things start to come to us. And that’s really what we’re going to discuss in this story.
[00:02:56] So let’s talk about it. Again, it’s little funny story here about a dog, and it’s a couple of dogs actually, just sitting together. There’s this big, old, large dog. You know, he’s an older dog. Been around for a long time. Then there’s a little puppy, and the little puppy is chasing its tail. He is just running around in circles, running around in circles, running around in circles. And the old dog kind of looks at him, and he finally says, you know, “Why are you chasing your tail?” And the little puppy looks up at him with those little sad eyes and says, “I’ve mastered philosophy. I have solved the problems of the universe, which no dog before me has accomplished. I’ve learned that the best thing for a dog is happiness, and that happiness is in my tail. Therefore, I am chasing it. And when I catch it, I shall have happiness.” So, the other dog just took a minute, looked at him, and said, “My son, I too have paid attention to the problems of the universe in my weak way and have formed some opinions. I too have judged that happiness is a fine thing for a dog, and that happiness is in my tail. I’ve noticed that when I chase it, it keeps running away from me. But when I go about my business, it comes after me.” And I repeat that last section because that wisdom of the older dog is really what we’re talking about is that “I’ve noticed that when I chase it, it keeps running away from me. But when I go about my business, it comes after me.”
[00:04:30] And so a lot of things in our lives we are, we are chasing. We want a better life, a better house, a better relationship. Maybe we want more money, more happiness, more joy and more peace. We want more awareness. And we chase, and we chase, and we chase, and we don’t give it time to come. And just as the older dog says, you know, “I realized that as I chase it gets further and further away from me.” And when we understand the metaphysics of that without getting too deep today- tomorrow’s our deep day- we get to know about “what is joy?” But I get a little deep. It basically means that we’re getting to want. That, that chase is creating the want of things. And that’s where we’ve got to start to slow down and recognize that we are, we are chasing our tail every day. And the true path to happiness and peace is to allow us to recognize, as Singer says, to surrender, and to allow things to start to work in our lives instead of pressing so hard. Now, I did like the fact that he says “I’ve noticed that, when I chase it, it keeps running away from me. But when I go about my business, it comes after me.” So, this isn’t just a total, “I’m not going to do anything!” And this goes back to the word surrender and our, the way that we discuss it. The way Michael Singer teaches it is that we’re not just giving up. Surrender doesn’t mean to give up. I know most people, that’s what you think. It’s like, “oh, I’m going to give up. I’m going to wave the white flag.” No. What surrender means that something’s coming into your life. So, you’re going to give everything you got. It’s here for you. Something’s come into your life. So, you’re going to give it all that you have. You’re going to go and put all your energy into it. You’re going to do it the best that you possibly can. Right? That’s what surrender means. It’s like, “Wow, this came into my life. OK. It’s here. I’m going to surrender to it and give it everything I’ve got.” And that’s basically the old dog saying, “But when I go about my business, it comes after me.”
[00:06:32] So, when you have a dream and you want to, you want more of something- and the older I get the more that I’m realizing it’s not the material as much as the inner workings of my brain, the inner workings of my mind, my spirituality that brings me joy. Right? That brings me happiness. It brings me peace. External stuff is, is great, but it’s, it’s not about that. It’s about the internal way that you approach life. That mindfulness as you go about your day. How you, how do you perceive it? That’s really what it’s about. And when you, when you understand that, then you just set goals. You focus on the actions. Sacred Six, right? What are, what are the actions to projects that are going to get you there? And what are the, the tasks that get your, get you there? And then you just focus on those tasks. Want to learn Spanish? You work on it a little bit every day. Want to increase value in your life? You go to ILD and you do the Intelligent Life Design course. Learn a little bit about increasing value, and you increase value in the marketplace, which in turn increases value for you. And you just go about doing it every day. You know, I wanted to build a business where I can be free and do the things that I wanted. And that’s what I’m doing. That’s what I’ve built. Right? And how did I do that? I go on about it every day. Is it perfect now? Is that where it needs to be? No. We’ve got a long way to go, but we just keep focusing on 1% improvement every day. Right? I know there’s a, you know, a lot of podcasting going on, and I love it. Andy Donohue’s got a podcast. Cindy Brown’s got a podcast. Lee Kellogg’s got a podcast now. They’re, well, you know, working to get their information out into the world today. And I’d like. It’s great. Is it going to happen overnight? No. It’ll, it takes a while for you to gain traction and to get people listening and to start, you know, putting that energy out there. But I applaud them for doing it. They’re taking the first steps. Right? They’re working to get some information out and put it out into the world.
[00:08:31] But you’ve got to just continue to go about your business every day and not chase. And that’s what I see a lot of people do is they chase. Especially in my world, in the speaking world and in the, you know, kind of, this coaching world, I see a lot of people push in this area, when it’s exactly the opposite. You just got to let go, and that’s when things start to work. I mean, not just letting go by, you know, giving up. I’m saying, “Let go and just focus on the task at hand. Do the work that’s necessary.” And I think one of the issues when it comes to, you know, building a business or, you know, going to the job or doing things in increasing value, a lot of people underestimate the work or the time that is involved in, you know, building that.
[00:09:18] Just like for me, I mean, one of my areas that I really like is, you know, fiction. I’m a big fantasy guy. You know, a Dungeons Dragons guy, and my books are taking a while. And part of the reason is I’m not doing as much work as I need to. I’m not pushing it. I’m looking for the system to help me. But at the end of the day, I’m not doing what I need to do. Now, I’ve got some new software I like that I’m going to be doing some stuff with transcriptions, but I still, I’m not, I just know I’m not putting in the work. I’ll be the first to admit that. All right? So, as we think about this wisdom of this older dog, I want you, I want you to think about it in your life and recognize, you know, what are you chasing right now? And is it running away from you or coming to you? And if it’s not coming to you, then you’ve got to start, to start to do. To go about your business. And you got to start putting- not just talking about anymore- but taking action towards it. And with no expectation, with no assumption, and just be thankful that it’s coming.
[00:10:21] You know, back in the day when we, when, when, when I used to study about prayer and metaphysics and when we were studying prayer, one of things we did when we prayed is that when you pray- and again, Morning Coach is not religious, I’m just talking about my studies. Right?- so when you pray and you pray to your god or your deity or the universe, that you pray with the assumption that the thing that you’re praying for has already happened. Right? That you have gratitude that it’s already, already, already in your life. And I think that’s an issue for a lot of people because, again, a lot of people who want to pray, they pray because they want it in that moment instead of just having. being grateful that it’s coming and that it’s going to come at some point. So, it’s kind of the same thing when it comes about getting rid of this one and finding true happiness in the process. Right? And that’s kind of what the older dog is saying is just, you know, “Stop chasing your tail.” Just leave and go about your business and then, all of a sudden, it starts to happen for you. Right? It starts to come up for you as it starts, it starts to, as you start to manifest it.
[00:11:30] So, today as we go about our day, our job, again, is to be what? Is to be mindful. Is to be aware of “are we chasing our tails?” And as soon as we recognize the fact that we’re chasing, to change the way that we’re going about our day, to change the way that we’re going about our mental mindset or the perception that we have, so that we can get that happiness, that joy, that peace back and allow us to start living the life that we’re looking to live. Got to watch that. Watch the want and watch the chase.
Be aware of the way you’re doing things. And just allow them to come, and focus on doing the basics day in and day out. And it’ll start to happen for you. OK?
[00:12:14] So, let’s read the story one more time before we close the day because I think it’s a cute story. I’m a dog lover, and I can just picture this little puppy. So, the little puppy is chasing his tail. And the large dog’s watching him, seeing this dog go run around in circles, going “what is that little dog doing?” He looks over and says, “Why are you chasing your tail?” And the puppy replies, “Hey, I’ve mastered philosophy. I’ve solved problems that the universe, I’ve solved the problems of the universe which no dog before me has accomplished” as he kind of looks up, proud. “I’ve learned the best thing for me and for other dogs is happiness, and that happiness is in my tail. Therefore, I’m chasing it. When I catch it, I shall have happiness.” The older dog took only a minute to reply and said, “My son, I too have paid attention to the problems of the universe in my weak way, and I’ve formed some opinions. I too have judged that happiness is a fine thing for a dog, and that happiness is in my tail. I’ve noticed that when I chase it, it keeps running away for me. But when I go about my business, it comes after me.” Again, to repeat. “I’ve noticed that when I chase it, it keeps running away from me. But when I go about my business, it comes after me.”
[00:13:28] So, today, let’s go about our business with peace, with joy, with happiness, and really believe that we can have the ability to manifest the wonderful life that we are after. And we can by just stopping the chase. So, let’s stop the chase. I didn’t say stop the work. Let’s stop the chase and allow the wonderful bounty of this life to come to you.
