Episode 2890 Importance Of The Morning Routine
[00:00:00] Good morning and welcome to Morning Coach today. I am so glad you’re with us. As you know, my name’s J.B. Glossinger, and this is your personal evolution system, the place to get your day started right. Welcome, welcome, welcome. I’m so glad you’re with me today. ‘Cause we are rockin’ and rollin’. And we’re having some fun, putting some great energy. That’s what we do every day here at Morning Coach. Put that great energy out there, and if you don’t have any, sending you some.
[00:00:37] And also, we’re sending some energy to all of those that are dealing with Irma right now. We have hurricane Irma out there brewing. I know it’s hitting some of the islands, and sending some heartfelt energy. And we’re, we’re actually in possibly the cone here in South Florida. We’re used to it. We’re prepared. We’re ready. I know, I always get a lot of e-mails when these hurricanes come through. If something were to happen, we’re out of power for a long time, then we would, you know, help, get some help from Lee or Tony and get through it, to get us, to keep the Coachcast going, because we’ll always be doing that. But well, we have to kind of wait and see how things are going to turn out over the next few days to kind of see where it’s going, and hopefully, it, you know, it weakens, and it doesn’t really bring any damage to anybody. But it is that time a year. And like I said, here in South Florida, we’re pretty used to the whole hurricane drill, and we go through it every year at least a couple of times, and it’s just part of living here. And so, you know, we’ll get through it either way. But still want to send out any energy to anybody dealing with that, are still dealing with the cleanup of the last one in Houston and Texas, in that area. A lot of storms this year. So, we just, you know, stay positive and keep moving on, you know, during those times.
[00:01:53] Today, I want to get into a topic that’s obviously near and dear to my heart. It’s something we don’t talk enough about here at Morning Coach, but we’re going to be getting into it more and more. And that is this idea of the morning routine, and why it’s so important that we start to get a morning routine going. You know, and normally when I talk about this, now most people that are listening to Morning Coach are people that get up early in the morning, and when I start talking about morning or Morning Coach or, you know, the importance of the mornings, I always get people that say, “well, what about the night owls? You know, what about those people who stay up all night and work?” Well, there’s still morning for them. OK? So, no matter, you know, the morning routine whether it’s at 1:00 in the afternoon or 4:00 in the morning is still a morning routine. You still need to do something when you get up and get going.
[00:02:44] And so, this year, you know, as we get into mindfulness and meditation- and we’re going to be getting into the new course- as we get into that, one of the big aspects of that is getting organized. Right? So you, so you can be mindful. So you can slow things down, and you really can allow things to come start to work for you, to happen, you know, for you. And so this idea of a morning routine is so important.
[00:03:05] So, it’s, I’m not saying you can’t be a night owl and be successful. There’s some people that that’s how they work. I will tell you, for me, when I started getting up in the morning is when everything started to change. That becoming an early riser was actually more important to me than it was a night owl. I thought I was getting more done, but really I wasn’t. And, you know, nights, for me, are about sleeping and mornings are for organizing, getting together, and really making the, you know, the life work. In fact, I really believe that not many good things happen after midnight anymore. And, you know, for me, it’s about getting to sleep and getting up and enjoying the day. And, I don’t know, just for somebody that used to be into that kind of that night life and staying up late and not getting up in the morning, it is so refreshing to be up when the sun is up and to feel good and feel healthy. I think it’s just a good feeling. But that’s up to you. Just because you stay up late and you are considered a night owl and not an early riser, you can still have a morning routine. The morning routine is the routine that when you get up, that you’re going to do. OK?
[00:04:14] And it’s really important that you start to get some things working that you do consistently every day because what happens is we are creatures of habit, and you’ll start to become more productive, you’ll start to be more organized, and you’ll start to be more structured.
[00:04:28] So, what you’ll see on the new site as we continue to develop it out and get things going with it is there’s going to be a morning routine section. And in the morning routine, we’re going to have the Power Morning Routine, which is the Morning Coach routine, and we’re also going to start sharing what other people do for their routines. And I’m going to build a directory of morning routines so that you can pick and choose, you know, what works for you and what is the best routine for you. And, again, we say it’s the morning routine, but really the first-thing-when-you-wake-up routine is really what we’re talking about. And the importance of that is it gets you structured and gets your day organized.
[00:05:05] So, for me, the routine that I use has six steps. Right? And so, it’s like the Sacred Six, right? So, this is Sacred Six of the morning routine. And for me, the way the morning routine works is this, #1 is that it always starts the night before, meaning that the routine is set up so that in the morning I’m already structured and organized. So, the night before, there’s a lot of things that happen. I, you know, the brain dump of putting stuff on paper so I don’t have to think about it as I sleep, making sure I get a good night’s sleep, making sure that I get to bed at the proper time, shutting the TV off, maybe reading some fiction. All those things that we talk about sleeping are so important. You know, maybe using some devices to help you sleep. If you’re snoring, we’re going to talk about that a little bit. But really, getting a good night’s sleep. So, being able to have a great morning ritual starts, starts in the morning, in the, I mean, in the night before. OK? So, Step One of the Morning Coach Power Routine is making sure you get to bed, and you sleep, have a good night’s sleep the night before. OK? So, that’s Step One.
[00:06:15] And I think it’s critical that when you start thinking about your morning routine or you’re thinking about the get-up routine is that you always focus on the night before. It starts there. That’s where a great day starts is when you’re going to bed the night before. And also, remember, in the Sacred Six journal, we have that, you know, visualization that you can do right before you go to bed. You know, you think about the three things that you’re, that you’re positive for the day, and then you do what Wayne Dyer taught us, Dr. Wayne Dyer, was to, you know, spend five minutes of visualization and then you go to sleep. So, that’s really part of your morning routine. OK? So, that’s Step One.
[00:06:50] Step Two, then, is when you wake up. And this is just my thing, OK? I like to drink a glass of warm water, room temperature water with lemon in it. Lemon water. So, I literally will make this water at night, take it out of my, we have bottled water, you know, out by the house. In the house, we have this bottled water, and I fill it up, and it’s cold. So, it’s cold, and I’ll cut my, my lemon and squeeze a half a lemon in there. And I put it on my nightstand, so that when I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is I drink that warm- because it’s been sitting all night, right?- lemon water. And there’s a lot of reasons for that, and I’m not going to get into all the reasons, the health reasons. But for me, it’s just part of my ritual. It gets me up, and it cleans me out. It really gets my system clean. It helps detox. There’s a lot of good things about lemon water and about ph and really getting your system in balance. And that’s what the lemon water does. So, I kind of get up in the morning, again, starting the night before. The second, the first thing I do is I get up. I kind of stretch. And I like to wake up like an animal does, if you ever watch an animal wake up, kind of stretch and you just get ready for a great day. Then I drink that lemon water. OK?
[00:08:03] The next thing that I do as soon as I drink my lemon water, the third thing I do is I get moving. Now, I’m very fortunate that I have Neo here, because I have to go get him his first meal of the day. So, he eats like a hamburger patty. So, he’s on a raw diet. So, I go get him this raw food, put it in his bowl, and he eats that. Then we head out. We go for a walk. We’ll go for a nice two-mile walk. You know, about 20 minute, 30 minute walk.
[00:08:32] And it just fits in to our next step, which is to listen to Morning Coach. So, as I’m walking first thing in the morning, you know, lemon water, then I feed Neo, then we go for a walk, I’m listening to Morning Coach. And that’s right, I know it surprises some people that I actually listen to Morning Coach, but I do. I listen the same as everybody else because I do all this stream of consciousness. And so, I need to hear what I’ve said. So, I got to make sure I said it right, even though I, sometimes I don’t like what I sound like. It’s like, “oh my gosh, I sound like that?” but I got, I got over that a long time ago, since we’re on Episode 2,890, right? But still, no, I listen to Morning Coach. So, we’re walking, and I’m listening to Morning Coach. 15. 20 minutes. that’s it. You’re not hearing me saying I’m going to the gym. I’m not lifting weights. I’m not doing my 5K. I’m literally just moving. Getting my head right, kind of getting myself in the right, right space, you know? And there’s some meditation time in there, you know, kind of, kind of walking meditation. You know, as I’m doing this, this, this, you know, listen to Morning Coach, kind of just get my head right. Right? So, it’s a, it’s a nice walk. It’s a nice kind of movement area, and that’s it. Then I come home. Now, again, I’m not all sweaty even though it is in south Florida- you get a little warm here- but it’s not like I went running. I went walking.
[00:09:54] So, then I sit down at my desk, and then I do my Sacred Six. That’s when I pull out my Sacred Six journal. I write down what I’m grateful for, what consistency or habits that I’ve been working on, the day of the week so I know. I throw my schedule in there. It takes me 10 minutes. The Sacred Six things that I need to do, the focus that I’m going to have, anything that I need to set up my day. That takes me 5 to 10 minutes because I’m used to it. Right? So, now I understand what my day is going to be about, and I know what’s going on.
[00:10:24] So, as soon as I kind of do that, I breathe, and I kind of just understand what the day is like. And that’s when I do one of two things. 1) If I’m not going to the gym that day because I’m training with Sir at night, I go into the shower. So, it’s, I head into the shower, get, take a shower, and start my day. Right? And that’s if I’m not going to work out and if, maybe, I’m working out later or if I’ve got something else going on that day but I’m not going to the gym in the morning. Or, if I, if I’m going to the gym, then I go to the gym after that. I go to the gym after that. I don’t do the stuff after. This is the first thing I do when I wake up everyday. OK?
[00:11:01] So, let me repeat that because I think it’s important that you get that I’m, you know, I’m not doing this, you know, a marathon. I’m not lifting weights. That’s just not part of my morning routine or my morning ritual. That’s just something that I do.
[00:11:15] So, Step One is what? It starts the night before. What am I doing? You know, do I got my Sacred Six journal out? Am I writing three positive moments? Am I doing the five minute visualization? Yes. I’m doing those steps. OK? I’ve got my mind squared away, I’ve wrote down the things that I need to do, so I don’t have to think about them. And I read a little fiction, and I’m off to bed. Right? So, that’s the first step of the morning routine.
[00:11:39] Second thing: I wake up in the morning and the night before also I prepared, you know, half a lemon, a glass of water. I squeeze that water in the glass. I wake up to a warm glass of, or room temperature, glass of water with lemon in it. I drink that first thing.
[00:11:56] Neo’s staring at me, so I grab my iPhone. I feed him. And then I put my shoes on, and we go outside for a walk. We go outside for 15, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, somewhere in there. Right? So, I’m listening to Morning Coach, kind of doing walking meditation, getting my mind right, getting the positive going.
[00:12:14] I come in. I’ve kind of thought about things. I sit down. Now, first thing is I write down my gratitude, what I’m grateful for, because I got my Sacred Six journal sitting right in front of me. I write down the consistency areas. You know, how am I doing? And the consistency things that I’m working on. What is my schedule for the day? I write that in. And then the things that I need to accomplish for the day.
[00:12:35] I’m all set. I keep the journal there. I put my pen down, and do one of two things: either head to the gym, go get a good workout in, or I head to the shower and I come back and get started. OK?
[00:12:47] So, you got kind of the Morning Coach, really, the Power Routine, and you can do that any time. So, so, back to thinking about the night owl, if you get up at 10:00, you can still do that. You get up, you get moving, you get walking, and you get, get going a little bit. A lot of people say, “well, J.B., I just don’t have time.” This is where you’ve got to make time. You’ve got to figure out a way that you can carve 20-30 minutes- that’s what this takes out of your, out of your mornings. You’ve got to do it first thing. You can’t let other things get in the way. And I know, if you’ve got a family, you’ve got to beat them up. You’ve got to beat them up. You’ve got to get up earlier than they do, because you got to get moving before they do.
[00:13:24] So, you’ve got to get up a half an hour earlier than they do. And you get up, and you drink your lemon water. You get moving. You go for a walk, You listen to Morning Coach while you’re walking. You come in. You do your Sacred Six. You get organized. And then you start your day. Again, either shower or maybe you need to make breakfast for the family or maybe you’re making breakfast for the family, whatever it is, then you start your day. Right? But this Power Morning Ritual and the morning routine is really, really going to set your day up for success.
[00:13:53] And that’s what I want you to do. OK? So, you’ve got the steps. You can break it down. And then what we’ve got to do is just start putting that morning routine together, or I like to call it a morning ritual. But we call it a morning routine because that’s what most people are looking for, but I call mine a ritual because I like to consider it a ritual. It’s a little more spiritual and more sacred. But it literally can really make a difference if you start to apply this.
[00:14:18] So, what’s your homework? Well, I would tell you to get started with this tomorrow. OK? Start working on your morning routine and get this structure in place, so you’re doing the same things. But keep it real simple, and you’ll be amazed at how awesome your day starts to become, and how things start to work for you. OK? So, I love you. Get out there. Have a great one!
[00:14:38] Tomorrow we’re going to have an interview which is going to be fun with Scott. Talk a little bit about him and what things are going on in his world. And we’re going keep rolling here, every day, at morningcoach.com. That’s what we’re doing, getting your morning started with energy. And hopefully, you’re making this part of your morning ritual or morning routine because that’s what we’re here for, to get your day started right. OK? I love you. Get out there. Have a great day. I’ll be back with you right here tomorrow morning to get your day started.
