Feng shui is a system for arranging your environment in harmony and balance with the natural world around you. Feng shui takes a look at how energy (also called chi or qi) flows through your house. Think of your home as more than just a place you sleep, eat and store stuff; think of your living environment as its own living ecosystem that has an effect on you.
There is an abundance of information on feng shui so to not let it overload you, we have put together a few easy feng shui tips you can apply right now to create a better quality of energy in your home.
6 Simple Feng Shui Tips for Beginners
1. What you want to do first is to identify which areas of your house need the most attention.
What rooms do you feel good about and tend to spend more time in? These will be the rooms to do last. Identify the rooms that you tend to neglect like possible the garage, coat closets or that junk drawer / room. One good think to understand is that in feng shui the house is viewed as a whole being in which one part is intricately connected to the other, so it’s important that we take care of the rooms / areas that are not tended as much.
2. Get to know your Bagua Map.
The feng shui bagua map (pictured to the right) is one of the main tools to analyze the energy of a certain space. Bagua is the feng shui energy map of your environment that shows you which areas your home is connected to specific areas of your life.
Stand inside your house with your back to the front door. Now look straight in front of you. The section of your house in the far right corner is the relationship zone. The part in the far left corner is the money sector. And work yourself around the map.
3. Remove sha from your environment.
Sha means, “Negative influence.” If there is something that is not pleasing to your senses then it is a sha, and should be addressed. Sha can affect any of the five senses; sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. Sha can also be a feeling. The sense of something uncomfortable to you can be a sha. If you see something that is uncomfortable in the environment, such as a broken faucet, or an overflowing trash can, take care of it immediately. What you will find is that you soon feel a lot better about your environment.
We’ve all walked into a clutter free room and can immediately sense a lighter feeling than that of one when we walk into room that is chock full of items; with stuff just piled everywhere that it is an absolute mess. Busy environments are not relaxing environments, so especially in your bedroom you should not have a lot of bright colors and a lot of things. Keep it plain and simple. The bedroom is a place to reenergize and destress.
5. Bring in living plants.
Become aware of the quality of your air indoors. One of the best ways to improve it by bringing in some indoor plants. So, go out and buy yourself some pretty plants that you can manage. If you are someone like me with a lot of electronics, get two or three plants and you’ll feel the difference.
6. Fix what’s broken.
Understand that your space is a mirror of you. Broken things have no place in your home. Whether it’s broken appliances, broken chairs, broken floor tiles either fix them or get rid of them, but don’t let them stay broken. While your eliminating these broking things or fixing them in your home you may also find it easier to fix other lingering problems in your life at the same time.
Define a feng shui plan for your house. Even small shifts can make a big difference in bringing you a harmonious home with great energy that will be yours to enjoy!
